THE OBSERVATORY A Mad-lib by, Kaleta & Super Yamba Band

Our class went on a field trip to a CRAZY.observatory. It was located on top of the BROOKLYN BRIDGE, and it looked like a giant UBER DRIVER.with a slit down its BODEGA. We went inside and looked through some BEER.and were able to see DRINKS.in the sky that were millions of DANCERS away. The men and women who SHOUT.in the observatory are called DOGS, and they are always watching for comets, eclipses, and shooting TACOS. An eclipse occurs when a GUITAR.comes between the earth and the DJ and everything gets THIRSTY. Next week, we plan to SING at.the Museum of Modern DRUNK PEOPLE.

Some questions with Kaleta & Super Yamba Band

At what point in time did you graduate to Kaleta & Super Yamba Band Band?

In 2014 several members of a band called Brand New Life started an afrobeat side project called Super Yamba Band. It didn't feel like we were "graduating" at the time but we definitely transitioned into a new fun project.

What is your favorite dance move of all time?

Kaleta's Mawuwe dance!

What makes a performance a success to you?

When we're able to move the crowd into a frenzy dancing!

How does the notion of community play into your work?

We value our Brooklyn afrobeat community and are proud to be a part of it. It's a constant inspiration to what we do.

What is your favorite park in New York City?

Prospect Park

What has been your biggest high as a band?

Probably playing the Apollo Theatre in April 2019. High Fidelity was pretty awesome too!

What genres do you pull the greatest influence?

Afrobeat, Funk, and Soul

What is the creative process between all of you?

Well, it's evolved over time but lately, we've been taking grooves and ideas that Kaleta comes up with and arranging them a band.

What is your dream neighborhood to live in, and why?

I'm pretty happy living in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. It's hard to beat the park! But I do miss my old stomping grounds of Crown Heights. Hard to pick between those two.

Is your songwriting style more organic or structured?

It's a bit organic. We often work and jam certain grooves until they feel really good and build off of that. Once we have a groove that feels "special" we might ask... Does this need a bridge? Does this need a smooth intro? Who's going to take a solo? How are we gonna wrap it up and end the song?

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)

Come out and get on the dance floor with us at Baby's All Right. We've got a special night planned at one of our very favorite clubs and the amazing Say She She opens up.
