Oh Brooklyn-based bards The Fiery Furnaces, how I’ve missed your quirkiness. I discovered this art rock duo well after their recently ended hibernation began. The band’s appreciated-in-a-certain-kind-of-group 2004 album Blueberry Boat, is and was a joy and sounded experimental to my college-aged ears way back in 2013. New single “Down and the So and So on Somewhere” elicits, even in the name, that sort of half-remembered encounter with a memorable set of strangers, and that’s the effect of this single. This sort of nostalgic return for the band to the kind of upbeat, approachable sonic experimentation they were in the midst of up until their hiatus back in ‘09. Hopefully this means we’re due for a full length from this dynamic duo.

“The Fiery Furnaces” hit their stride in this fantastically average tune. My experience with this band has always been in fascination with their frenzied and unpredictable musical tendencies. Much to my surprise their single “Down at the So and So on Somewhere” is steady and even keel. It makes sense that in a time when everything is flipped upside down the The Fiery Furnaces would produce a track to bring stability and warm waves of calm. Other than that observation I don’t have much else to say about the track. It is a solid lo-fi synth pop tune to tap your feet to.

Clean and crisp production with just the right amount of electronic. I really was drawn to the simplicity of every layer Fiery Furnaces achieves on “Down and the So and So on Somewhere”. The humorous lyrics fit in so nicely to the overall charm of this song…it’s just...HAPPY. Seriously though, if you have been yearning for a Postal Service extension with a lighter touch–Fiery Furnaces are that missing puzzle piece.
