The Ricos revamp the classic feel bad college radio rock sound of the 90s in their latest single “What Comes Next?”. I enjoyed this release quite a bit. It's gritty, moody, and has plenty of elongated syllables.

Ok, I know I said I got Galaxie 500 vibes from that Year of Goodbye EP from Demeter, but I REALLY get them on this single. The jangly, overdriven guitar, the slow, plodding drums, and the lilting vocals make for a carbon copy aesthetic from the On Fire days. That's not a complaint necessarily-- I love that album, but I'm left unable to really point out anything distinct here.

There is no way I could review this without nerding out about the guitar sounds. If you just played me the instrumental of the clean guitar that starts off What Comes Next I would already give this thing a solid 7. Overall this is a nice update to the slacker rock cannon, and I am excited to see what this band could do full length.
