No Backpack is a fantastically haunting commentary on letting go of a relationship that’s been drifting apart for some time. Brooklyn-based frontman Felix Walworth’s vocals eerily compliment the echoing phrase of the whole song “I don’t want to run with you”. No Backpack is track 7 on the full LP “Point The Flashlight and Walk” releasing on November 13th. I am curious to listen to the full project and see how No Backpack fits into the flow of the piece–it feels like an appropriate shift in mood smack dab in the middle.

Haunting and moody and wonderful. Told Slant brings us a downtempo and cozily distorted sad song for losing a lover with “No Backpack”. This track is poignant in its simplicity and straightforward delivery. This isn’t a song that seems to deal in metaphor and opting more for a lyrical style closer to the stripped down backing instrumentation. I’m certainly interested to see what else Told Slant will bring us with the full release of The Flashlight and Walk out November 13th.

Muddied by vocal distortion, and an uneven balance “No Backpack” is not my favorite release from Told Slant. After two albums of mostly stripped back acoustic tracks the artist is breaking into some uncharted territory with this track. While I appreciate artists continuing to progress and develop, “No Backpack” feels like it still has a bit to figure out.

‘Told Slant’, an Emily Dickenson poetry reference, anyone? This guy had my heart at like the first beat regardless.
