Meet Warwick Cranston

Ahoy tenderfoots. Allow me to take you on a supersonic journey into the mind of the illusive bleep producer Warwick Cranston. This terrific semi-anonymous project cranks out hard-hitting, atmospheric electronic music like you would not believe. Get to know them as we chat about music production, the creative process, and bad habits.

“A CHARMING STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING” A fill in the blank with Warwick Cranston

Once upon a OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE, there were three little pigs. The first little pig was very LONG LASTING, and he built a house for himself out of INTRODUCTION SOLIDS. The second little pig was PALLADIUM, and he built a house out of TIMELY DELIVERIES. But the third little pig was very HERMETIC, and he built his house out of genuine EPILATORS. Well one day, a mean old wolf came along and saw the houses. ""???????!" he said. "I'll CIRCULATE and I'll GALVANIZE and I'll blow your house down." And he blew down the first little pig's REQUIREMENT and the second little pig's TROUGHS. The two little pigs ran to the third pig's house. Thereupon, the wolf began blowing, but he couldn't blow down the third little pig's SENSE OF USE. So he HEAT TREATED off into the forest, and the three little ARMORED pigs moved to Chicago and went into the sausage business.

Would You Rather

have to live for two years inside a Chuck E Cheese, or the guitar center on 42nd street?

Big fan of Times Square here honestly. Opposed to other culture of consumption-centered spaces like Hudson Yards, it at least assumes that you're a flesh-bearing human and not a ghost watching late capitalism play out. If you play your cards right you can also pay just $5 for a caricature and get a stranger stare at you for a few minutes, quite the steal.

Some questions with Warwick Cranston

What gear do you use most often when producing music?

Computer, modular, flute, ios, very little max/msp

What is the creative process like with you? Where does it start?

The Warwick Cranston stuff was originally intended to be mainly a timeline daw centric kick drum music outlet but that guideline has expanded. Almost any of my free time goes into diving into a sample/synth setup/plugin/pattern/field recording/instrument until there's almost nothing left and then I hit render once or twice every few weeks.

What has been a recent innovation in music that you admire?

Tiktok distortion teens, big room non-music, the wave of chilling-centered streaming/playlist based listening potentially coming to a crest

Who did the artwork on your 2020 release “Indestructible Sleeve”

I compiled and arranged images of knife-proof sleeves from tactical garment wholesalers. There's a big industry around supporting the militarization inside ppl's minds, guns being the largest one probably but a lot of my focus is on how smaller manufacturers are filling that space in what otherwise appears as a neutral online commerce setting.

What is your worst habit?

Having a semi-anonymous electronica alias is up there

Do you have any plants? How are they doing?

I grew a pea plant from a sprouted pea in my fridge and after a couple months it produced exactly one pod, would recommend

What kinds of spaces do you want to take people with your music?

I'm assuming people are hearing my music while fairly online

Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
