WOLF
Meet Wolf
Julia’s solo project Wolf delivers hard truths in beautiful ways. The artist’s innate ability to distill relatable emotions and scenes in their tracks makes for an incredibly intimate listen. Their tracks sparkle with glitzy and glamorous production that compels me to try decorating with string lights. In our latest interview, we chat with Julia about their latest single “Hoops”, coffee, and social media.
“FIREFIGHTERS” A fill in the blank by, WOLF
Almost every community in America now has a bowling LIGURIA because bowling has become very MOLDY with young SURFERS. Most of them become very GORGEOUS at the game. The main object of the game is to roll a heavy bowling BRAD PITT down the alley and knock down the 17 pins which are at the other end. If you knock them down in one roll, it's called a MOM SNORING. If it takes two rolls, it's called a SISTER BURPING. Many alleys have automatic WOLF setters. Others hire PLANETS who set the pins by CARY GRANT. The most important thing to remember when bowling is to make sure you have a good grip on the SPELLBOOK or you're liable to drop it on your MIDDLE FINGER!
Would You Rather
your bed breathe heavily or narrate everything you are doing.
Definitely breathe. I wake up so much in the middle of the night the narrations would scare me to death.
Some Questions with WOLF
How has the current COVID-19 lockdown impacted your creative process?
Being quarantined has really forced me to be creative within the walls of my bedroom. This is usually the space I create in regardless, but the difference now is I’m drawing less inspiration from the outside world and more from experiences I’ve had but perhaps overlooked. It’s challenging me to really dig into the corners of my brain I haven’t visited in a while.
Do you drink Coffee or Tea? How do you take it?
Coffee! I’m a regular Lorelai Gilmore except I usually have mine one part coffee, ten parts caramel sauce.
How important is a collaboration to you as a solo musician?
Collaborations can bring so much insight and fresh perspective to the table which I believe can only benefit the people involved. I think it’s going to be really important when it comes to playing my music live and connecting with other musicians. There are so many new artists I admire and love and hope to one day collaborate with like Aries, Deb Never, and Alex Mali. But right now since I still don’t have too many songs out I’d like to continue building my catalog on my own, because for me it’s crucial to really establish who I am as an artist early on. In the near future though, I can definitely see it happening.
How do you feel about the role social media plays in an artist's career?
Personally, I think it can be very powerful. It gives artists a place to be expressive and share their thoughts and opinions, showing who they are beyond just a Spotify playlist. I find that while I can be shyer in day to day life, social media gives me a platform to be myself and interact with people who I may not have connected with otherwise.
Where is your favorite place to find/discover new music?
When I was younger it was definitely Soundcloud. But now I surprisingly find a ton going down youtube rabbit holes or Spotify playlists. I’m also constantly asking my friends for any new music they like because we’re all pretty much in sync with our taste.
What was the best toy you remember from your childhood?
I was big on Gameboy!
What was the lyrical inspiration behind your latest single “Hoops”?
In college, every day after class my friends and I would go shoot hoops at the court and air out our feelings/ talk about life. I remember sticking out like sore thumbs in our jeans and boots, caring less about what we wore and more about the advice we exchanged. As I get older, I find it’s harder and harder to find real honesty like that in other people, so I wrote this as a nod to my friends for the gratitude I feel, and for giving me a place to unapologetically be myself.
Any final comments? (This is your electronic soapbox for one last answer.)
One big thing I learned about myself over these past years is the importance of self-reliance. Especially now during this lockdown, it’s been an opportunity to teach myself more about graphic design and video editing, alongside production and writing new songs. The idea of trying something new for the first time is always daunting, but I say don’t let lack of knowledge hinder you from creating, just go for it!
