A self-portrait by, Nick Cianci

Would you rather…

be carried everywhere you go by a giant person, or be confined to a segway. Why?

Segway because I would feel responsible for this giant person's happiness and I just don't have the bandwidth for that right now.

Some questions with Nick Cianci

Whats your favorite fruit?

Any berry.

What’s it like putting out work under your own name in a solo project? Do you find that you still work in a collaborative way? Or is this project a little more siloed?

I considered going by a different name for my own music when I started putting stuff out a year ago but I couldn't think of anything good. I definitely feel vulnerable using my own name because there's less separation between me and my work, but up until this past year I've struggled with taking ownership of what I create, so in a way using my own name is a practice in standing behind it. I've been really fortunate to find some collaborators I feel comfortable and inspired to work with as I've ventured into the world of self-producing... friends who've helped me get some ideas across. But this project is definitely more isolated from anything I've done in the past.

What is the best pizza in NYC?

I can only say what my favorite is, and that is Screamer's Pizza. It's vegan. I am not. But it's just so so good and my body feels so much better off for it when I crush a whole pie by myself.

Are you good at spelling?

I think so but I might hire a friend to proof-read this interview now that you ask.

What was the inspiration behind your 2022 single “Bluefish Season”?

That song is about friendship, particularly one very important to me, and coming to terms with how it changed as we both moved into different phases of our life. I wanted to try and snapshot the glory days of the friendship before life had a chance of making it a distant memory.

Do you plan on putting out some more singles or a larger scale release?

I originally thought the songs I released this year were going to be part of a record, but I've been writing more songs recently and I'm thinking they are a different batch altogether. But the songs I've put out since last September do feel like they are entwined in some way. I'm considering releasing one or two more from the old batch and putting it out as a long EP or mini record... Just to put a bow on that era and feel ready to put out new stuff.

What is objectively the best pet to have? Why?

For me? A dog. I've never had one and one of my biggest goals in life is to be a dog dad. It just doesn't make sense to get one until I have the means to take them with me wherever I go... It would be hard to bring my furry friend in a Sprinter van for 12 hours... probably cruel too. But I've always wanted to know the feeling of coming home to a dog who hasn't seen you all day and it just rocks their world so hard when you open the door. I'm tearing up thinking about it.

Who’s lyrics have inspired you in music you listen to?

Springsteen. Father John Misty. My friend Samia.

Have you been playing out with your solo stuff?

I actually haven't played out under my name with my band since before the pandemic, but that all changes 8/30 at The Broadway! I'm putting together a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood featuring my band, Razor Braids, Richie Quake, and a couple very special guests.

Who would be your dream director to work with on a music video?

Honestly I would love to work with my friend Lucy Blumenfield again but actually give her a proper budget to fund her vision. She directed the video for Hero's Entrance (over zoom because she had covid!) and did such a great job with the little resources I had.

Any Final Comments?

If you see me do anything dumb on Tik Tok, try to reserve judgment it's a hard world out there. Come to the show on 8/30 at The Broadway. It's fun for the whole fam and it's for a good cause.
